Last Saturday Patrick Lange, the 38-year-old German, broke the course record winning his third IRONMAN Kona World Championship. Lange, after winning back in 2017 and 2018, clocked an unofficial 7 hours, 35 minutes race leading the course in the running part.
Besides the toughness of the race, with a total of 226 kilometres of IRONMAN race distance, 30 degrees and almost 70 % humidity hit the air in Kona, Hawaii. This fact conditioned the last part and the pre-hydrating and nutrition strategy to face the last 42 km; Lange notched in 2:37:34.
At first glance, Patrick Lange’s strategy cannot be faulted. However, it seems that the rivals did not pay enough attention to the humidity or did not know how to add enough sodium to their nutrition, whereas the Austrian did.
Once he finished, Lange said he had been taking 120 grams of carbohydrate per hour on the bike with 226ERS HIGH FRUCTOSE ENERGY DRINK, and then running, about 70 grams per hour with HIGH FRUCTOSE GEL. He also took HYDRAJELLY on each of the special needs because he had it next to his bottles.
