Last Sunday, the Spanish 10km Road Championships were held in Bilbao, a prelude to a new format for the European Road Championships.
The two categories, men’s and women’s, were fiercely contested, with the race going down to the final metres.
In the men’s race, the most experienced Spaniard, 41-year-old Javier Guerra, crossed the line in third placeand fought for the win until the final metres, which he was denied by the higher finishing speed of the specialist, Jesús Ramos (three-time Spanish champion over this distance). He finished on the podium in 28:28, improving his Spanish M40 Masters record by nine seconds. Guerra is accumulating records thanks to the fact that he maintains a high level as an absolute elite.
The women’s race was a little more covered by the masses of popular runners, who ‘soiled’ the fight for the championship a little, but it must be said that thanks to this, Carla Gallardo and Laura Luengo, who were covered throughout the race, were able to run at a very high speed. In the end, it was Gallardo from Palencia who won the race, beating Laura Luengo by a record time of 31:57 for the Spanish 10km championship. Laura left with a well-deserved silver medal and a best time in the distance (32:00, 5th all-time), showing that she is growing more and more in road races since 2023.

Guerra, who also competed in Rome last June (24), will be competing in the half marathon, in a season in which he has been in excellent form with 1:02:41 in the Seville half marathon and his great performances in the 10K.
Laura, on the other hand, will be competing in the 10K as Spanish runner-up, although she also competed in the half-marathon at the last European Championships in Rome.
